Take The Stress Out of Hiring: Follow These 3 Steps

How to build your team (and keep your head on straight)

So you’ve decided it’s time to grow your team. Whether you’re gearing up for a busy season ahead, or you’ve had some recent turnover – we know that hiring new employees can be a bit stressful so we’ve put together a few tips that have helped us grow our own teams in the past. Let us know if these work for you! We’d love to hear any feedback you have about our resources.

1. Set (Realistic) Goals

Take an honest look at your company and locations and determine which positions are essential to be filled. Do you absolutely need to hire another marketing manager, or could someone in a similar position start to take on more responsibility for the time being? Expanding the strengths of your current team could be an alternative to expanding the number of team members.

Okay – so you know how many people you need to grow. The next question you must answer is how fast can you grow your team while maintaining quality? You don’t want to hire faster than you can onboard/train. You want to invest in your new employees so that they have a positive experience and are more likely to stay committed to the company. Set a realistic timeline goal for the amount of time it will take to onboard each new employee.

2. Create Clear Expectations

Great! Now that we know how many people we want to hire, and we know the timeframe we need to stick to, it’s time to set some guidelines. Creating clear expectations for all hiring managers and team members involved in the hiring process is key to success.

To create clear expectations – really nail down the answers to the following 3 questions:

  • Who is in charge of interviewing candidates at each stage of the hiring process?
  • What are the necessary qualifications (and which nice-to-haves are good to look out for when meeting candidates?)
  • Who will be following up with candidates including those who advance to the next phase and those who aren’t a good fit?

3. Ask for Help

You might be the best educator, store owner, hospital manager out there is – but no one can do everything perfectly. Focus on your strengths and ask for help where your blind spots are. Lucky for you, we know the perfect blind-spot cover! If you find value in posts like this, you will love our hiring software. We’re making hiring easier than ever before.
